Should I marry an unbeliever because I ‘love’ him?
Q: I am female, born again, forty-two years old and desirous of getting married but no suitable suitor. In my new neighbourhood, a man, 45, has shown interest in me. He’s good looking, runs a successful business and has never been married. But he does not believe in God and he’s not prepared to go to church. I think I am in love. I am in a fix. The bible says I should not marry an unbeliever, but I am not getting younger. Can you help? [First published on 18 January 2009]
Sister, I understand your condition, but I definitely will not encourage you to disobey the Constitution of the kingdom of God – the Bible. When a man gets born again, he becomes a new creature, a new specie entirely. He now has the nature of God; translated from death to life; translated from darkness to light. How can such a creature now have an intimate relationship with someone who’s not born again?
The bible puts it this way “How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols?” (2 Corinthians 6:14-16 (NLT)).
