Burying bibles in church foundations
Q: I am a son of a preacher in Calabar. I have seen many friends of my dad bury bible in the soil when laying foundation of their churches. When i got to Jos for my University education, I saw some church leaders also do the same. The mistake i made was i have not been able to ask them why do they bury the bible? Is this right? I hope it is not fetish? [First published on 25 January 2009]
This probably explains the degree of biblical ignorance in many churches today. The bible that should have been read has been buried in the foundation of the church building! It is strange that people bury bible while laying the foundation of a church. The paper on which a bible is printed has no magical power. The bible derives its power from being read and obeyed. It should be planted in the hearts of men and women. Read the parable of the sower in Matthew 13:18-23. The true essence of God’s Word is for it to be in our heart; this is how we can profit from it not by burying it.
